P R E F A C E

Hadagehgr<hta (Jacob Ezra Thomas) was a leading Haudenosaunee cultural authority who played a foundational role in the cultural revitalization of the 1970’s to preserve and promote the languages and ceremonies. Known as one of the most knowledgeable cultural resource people from the Six Nations Territory, Jake was an accomplished and inspiring leader who was at the forefront in preserving, promoting and protecting Haudenosaunee cultural traditions for future generations. He began to record, videotape and hand write, our history, oral traditions and ceremonies from within a traditional perspective. His life’s work has inspired generations and his principal oratorical and literal distinctions are in his recitations of The Code of Handsome Lake and The Great Laws of Peace. Today, we honour his wisdom, dedication and foresight for his courageous and selfless efforts, his legacy lives on through the Jake Thomas Learning Centre.
